The Majesty of God

FaithHopeLove

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory in the heavens.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels

and crowned them with glory and honour.

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Psalm 8 v1, 3-5, 9 NIVUK

There is something about creation which – both at the same time – makes my heart swell within me and shrinks me to the size of an ant: that the God who created this amazing, wondrous world cares about me and loves me, that I am special, valued and loved. But why!? I’m no-one special, no-one important, and yet I am described as ‘a little lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honour.’ God’s Majesty is reflected throughout all his creation, including in you and me. We too are the work of his fingers, and he is mindful of where and who we are. We are each unique. We are the moon to his sun, we reflect his glory and his majesty.

The Majesty of God is evident in every stunning sunset, magnificent mountain, stupendous storm but his majesty is also evident through the tiny acts of kindness offered by human beings – towards one another, creatures wild and domestic, the environment, etc..

With so many wars, famines and global tragedies, it can become easy to think of ‘restoring God’s creation’ as a daunting and impossible task but, wherever God’s name is praised – directly or indirectly – he is there, acting through and for the benefit of his created people.

So, two things then: never stop considering the created heavens, the work of God’s fingers. This earth on which we live is but a tiny speck of dust in the matter of the universe. Be awed, reverent, humbled by the next sunset, crashing wave, lightning storm you witness. Be mindful of the Almighty Creator, just as he is mindful of you. And never forget: you and I are his crowning glory, royal diadems to reflect his majesty and glory into all the world, one kindness at a time.
